When I came home from work on Friday, it was to a surprise package in the mail…from West Virginia…from someone I’ve never met before. Which is weird…that it came to my house, because usually I have things sent to Snap Snap, as someone is usually there to receive packages…so, I was thinking it was someone I knew…

Only it wasn’t…

I opened the package and what did I find?

A Reddy Kilowatt Christmas From the Kitchen vintage cookbook (and holiday decorating idea book) And I dropped dead…OK…I didn’t die, but I did cry.

Oh yes, I did.

I was so very touched that someone thought of me, and sent along something so treasured. Someone I seemingly didn’t even know…There’s not a lot of people who even know who Reddy Kilowatt is…except for one person I didn’t even think of…

What a difference 50 years makes. In this case, the difference between a Dream Cake and a pancake. This sorry story began here a few weeks ago, with a recipe for a Dream Cake from Hawaiian Electric Co. Now, HECO’s recipes are generally quite reliable, tested by the company’s home economists, and this particular one, from the 1950s, was marked with handwritten notes indicating it had been tried out a few times, and distributed (remember the Reddy Kilowatt recipe booklets?), with nary a problem. It didn’t seem to call for retesting in the new millennium. But then came the complaints — three at once. Three cakes that all baked up flat as pancakes. OK, so I tried the recipe, twice, using up a carton of eggs, and got — pancakes. I have no explanation for why the recipe worked then and doesn’t now. But on behalf of HECO and myself, to anyone who wasted eggs and cocoa powder trying this out, we are really sorry.

Isn’t he cute? the women seem to be saying. (The one on the left seems particularly enchanted.) They do not realize, of course, that one touch of Reddy means instant, smoking, sparky death. Yet they follow, for he has wonders to show them — as we shall see.
